I rode horses for many years and owned some
for several of those years. When I first moved to Oregon, I
lived on 20 acres in an old ranch house amid the juniper and
rim rock. I loved to watch the horses from my dining room
window. Coyotes would occasionally lope past in the morning
when the horses were eating the hay I threw to them.
After eating, the horses would gaze off into the distance
watching movement in the distant landscape. Though tethered to
human kind, it was as though somewhere back in their ancestral
memory they knew that they were intertwined with all things
wild. Often after a moment of quiet they would toss their
heads, snort then gallop towards the borders of the field,
their hooves kicking up a low haze of dust, the turquoise sky
above them.
