Seasonal transitions move through our lives as much as they move through the year. And certain months seem more changeable than others. Sudden shifts in the weather grab our attention, reminding us to prepare for the months ahead. Alongside these shifts, sun-drenched and still days make for moments of timelessness.
Stepping out of time isn't only about losing one's rhythm. Sometimes it's about taking time to look out from our busy lives and look into the larger ebbs and flows of life around us.
The Mexican celebration of the Day of the Dead or Dia de los Muertos is traditionally a time when the spirits of our departed loved ones can step back into the time cycle of our lives and visit us. Though the celebration is November 1st and 2nd, for me, the month of October is the time I pay special attention to the intuitive insights that come into my mind. In a sense, these insights during this time are my loved one's visits.
Celebrating this connection can be a lot of fun. Though Halloween or All Saints Day is related to Dia de los Muertos, it's not the same. The skeletons and skulls of Halloween are scary, those of the Day of the Dead are happy. Either way, the transition from October to November is an excuse for a party!
And a party needs Cookies for a Crowd. My new recipe is easy enough that kids can help make them as well as eat them! Try some of my other recipes for easy entertaining. My Carne Adovada is a New Mexican style crock-pot meal of shredded beef in a rich red chili sauce that is great alone as well as in tacos and burritos.
Live Happy,
Cristina
